Junior Coaching Basics
The 'Five Out' Offence
The 'Five Out' is a most basic offensive principle in Basketball. It's a very simple idea and therefore perfect for young players. There are two main facets of the 'Five Out'.
Firstly, all players are to evenly spread out beyond the 3-point line, spreading the defense.
The benefits being:
- Spreading the defence out makes it easier to drive into the keyway.
- Spreads the defense, making it harder to double-team.
- Ideal for junior players who haven't yet developed strong outside shooting but excel at driving to the basket.
And secondly, a player that passes the ball must DO something, possibly:
- Cut through the keyway.
- Set a screen on the ball, or
- Set a screen off the ball.
A simple offensive set up easily understood by young players. Spread out and if you pass the ball move!
